But "best" depends entirely on what you're after. After twenty years with agents living all along the coast, here's our honest run-through, sorted by what matters most to you.

For the beach and the international lifestyle: Orihuela Costa & Torrevieja

The southern coast around Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa is the most accessible way into coastal life. Blue Flag beaches, a large international community, healthcare in several languages, and year-round services. It also has the widest supply at sensible prices, from apartments to detached villas. Best for those who want convenience, community and value for money.

For the golfer: Ciudad Quesada & the golf cluster

Around Ciudad Quesada and to the south lies one of Europe's densest concentrations of golf — Villamartín, Campoamor, Las Ramblas and La Finca within short distances. A home with golf and pool views doesn't have to be expensive here. Best for those who want to play year-round while staying close to beach and airport.

For authentic Spain: Jávea & Dénia

Further north, Jávea and Dénia retain a stronger Spanish character — old town centres, markets, restaurants and a less overtly touristic feel. The scenery around the Montgó and the hidden coves is exceptional. Prices are higher and supply is more villa-led. Best for those seeking beauty and authenticity, and willing to pay for it.

For charm and views: Altea & Moraira

Altea, with its white old town, and Moraira, with its exclusive but relaxed feel, are the coast's most characterful addresses. Here it's about setting, views and quality of life rather than large volumes of stock. Best for those who prioritise atmosphere and charm over choice.
